1949 Obituary 
"HERBERT HENRY FLATMAN was associated with the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich, from 1918, when he began his apprentice ship, until 1941. On the completion of his practical training in 1924 (during which period he attended classes at the Woolwich Polytechnic) he was employed as a progressman, and subsequently was promoted senior draughtsman. In 1927 he was appointed estimator in the Chief Inspector of Armament's Department with responsibility for all estimates and was subsequently appointed senior equipment assistant. He then became attached to the Ministry of Supply as inspecting officer in the department of the Chief Inspector of Armaments. Mr. Flatman, whose untimely death occurred on 3rd November 1947, at the age of forty-four, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1940."
