"Professor HENRY PAYNE, whose death occurred on 28th March 1945, was for over twenty years professor of engineering and dean of the faculty in the University of Melbourne. He will be remembered for the valuable services he rendered over a number of years to the Institution as representative for Victoria on the Australian Advisory Committee.
He was born in Calcutta in 1871 and received his education at Bedford Modern School and at the City and Guilds Technical College, Finsbury. After holding several industrial positions he began, in 1898, his career as a teacher at University College, London, and held the post of lecturer in engineering and applied mathematics for five years. He was then appointed to the newly created Corporation Chair of Engineering in the South African College, Cape Town, where he was instrumental in building up a school and organizing diploma courses in civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering. In 1910 he entered upon his final appointment at Melbourne. Upon his retirement in 1932 the University in recognition of his services in the cause of engineering education, conferred on him the title of Emeritus Professor. Professor Payne was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1900 and was transferred to Membership in 1903. In addition he was a Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers and a founder member of the Institution of Engineers, Australia."
