HENRY LAWRENCE DAGLISH received his technical education at Armstrong College, Newcastle upon Tyne during 1908 and 1909, and served his apprenticeship with Clelands Graving Dock and Slipway Company, Willington-on-Tyne and also with the Wallsend Slipway and Engineering Company. He then went to sea and was employed as fifth engineer and subsequently as third engineer in full charge of watch.
In 1913 he went to Canada and was engaged by the Canadian Pacific Railway as sectional chargeman in the locomotive repair shops. A year later he took charge of the erection of a turbine for the Kaministiquia Power Company, of Ontario. In 1915 he enlisted and subsequently held the rank of captain in the Royal Engineers, with 40 tugs under his command. From 1919 to 1922 he was outside assistant manager to Messrs. Amos and Smith, Ltd., of Hull, and was responsible for repairs to ships and engines, also for the fitting-out of trawlers and coasting steamers. In 1923 he became engineer surveyor to Messrs. Merz and McLellan, consulting engineers, of Newcastle upon Tyne, and held this position until his death, which occurred on 7th March 1942, in his fifty-fourth year.
Mr. Daglish was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1922. He was also an Associate Member of the Institution of Naval Architects.
