Henry Elsdale
Henry Elsdale (1842-1900) the pioneer of aerial photography.
1883. Further refinements in aerial photography were made by Major H. Elsdale, Royal Engineers, who took photographs of the fortress at Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1883 using a clockwork-operated plate camera, and who subsequently commanded one of the first operational balloon sections in the British army during the 1890 expedition to Bechuanaland.

"Kate Moorhouse married Feby 1st 1887 to Major Henry Elsdale R.E., who was born in 1842 and died in 1900. He was interested in the adoption of war balloons by the British Army and invented a mechanism for taking photographs automatically from captive balloons. He contributed articles to the Nineteenth Century Magazine. He had command of the Royal Engineers in Natal and died when passing through San Fransisco, being buried in the Laurel Hill Cemetary."
He married at Brixworth Northamptonshire and had 2 sons, Henry Sefton Elsdale born in 1887 who probably died before 1892 when Henry Robinson Elsdale was born, he died in 1975.
