HENRY COLEMAN HEAD served his apprenticeship from 1890 to 1892 with the chief engineer of the South Metropolitan Gas Company, and remained on the engineering staff of that company for a further period of five years. From 1897 to 1904, he was assistant engineer to the Bournemouth Gas and Water Company. He then went to the Winchester Water and Gas Company where he held the appointment of general manager until 1929, in which year he became managing director. He successfully guided the company through a time of transition and difficulty and was responsible for the removal of the gas works from Staple Garden to the present site at Winnall.
Latterly Mr. Head practised as a consulting engineer, and was responsible for several water supply schemes in the south of England. Mr. Head, whose death occurred on 13th February 1941 in his sixty-ninth year was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1904, and was transferred to Membership in 1914. He was also a Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers. He took an active interest in the formation of the British Road Tar Association, of which he was the first chairman and later vice-president. He was also a past-president of the Institution of Water Engineers.
