. . . He joined the Madras Public Works Department as Assistant Engineer, 2nd grade, on the 1st of October, 1875, and arrived in India on the 14th of the following month. His first appointment was to the Tinnevelly district, where he was employed on irrigation works till December 1876. He was then transferred to the Nellore district, in special charge of the construction of a section of the Buckingham canal, one of the famine relief works, where between 7,000 and 8,000 coolies were under his management over a length of 5 miles.
