Hazelton Robson Robson
Obituary 1906 [1]
". . . Hazelton Robson Robson of Glasgow who was well known in engineering and shipbuilding circles on the Clyde and throughout the West of Scotland, . . . in his eighty-fourth year . . . early training and experience in Hawthorne's of Newcastle-on-Tyne and on the Continent. At the early age of twenty-four be was offered a position of trust in the extension of Messrs. Hawthorne's works in Leith and in this capacity he had to superintend some very extensive contracts. At the age of thirty-three he was appointed Engineering Surveyor to the Board of Trade for the Clyde ports, comprising the area from the Mull of Galloway to Oban. It was at his suggestion that the system granting certificates to engineers after examination was inst1tuted, and he was for a time the sole examiner for Scotland. On retiring from this appointment he became a member of the firm of David and William Henderson and Co., engineers and shipbuilders, and the rapid extension of that firm's business during the fifteen years that he was a partner was in great part due to his energy and enterprise. He was one of the or1ginators of the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Scotland - now in its jubilee year - and was president from 1874 to 1876. During his later years Mr. Robson was often appointed a commissioner to conduct the inquiries into causes of explosions, &c., and was a frequent arbitrator in d1sputes connected with shipbuilding and engineering. Up to the end he maintained an active interest in various business concerns. Even the day prior to his death he was engaged in the forenoon at a foundry in the west end of Glasgow, and was attending a meeting of directors later in the day when his life closed so suddenly. He is survived by his wife and three daughters."
