HAROLD S. BOUMPHREY was born 26th October, 1876, and served an apprenticeship of seven years at Messrs. Laird Bros. Birkenhead, from 1890 to 1897.
He commenced his sea experience in Messrs. John Glynn & Co., and later served in the S.S. "Monmouth," of Messrs. Elder Dempster & Co.; he was in this steamer when she took 110 days for the passage from Galveston, U.S.A., to Melbourne, during the South African war, when she was posted as "Missing."
Joining the White Star Line 26th November, 1900, he served in the various positions in the steamers, attaining the position of Chief Engineer in 1905, and in November, 1906, was selected from the existing sea-going staff engineers and appointed 2nd Assistant Superintendent Engineer at Liverpool. In May, 1907, he was appointed 1st Assistant Superintendent, serving in this capacity until his death, on duty at the office, on 11th June, 1920. He was most able and energetic and had always the confidence of his Company and was universally respected.
He was elected a Member of the Liverpool Engineering Society on 25th March, 1908.
