H. S. Mitchell CBE, FlnstPS, MBIM was commissioned in 1927 and had six years foreign service before transferring to the RAOC 10 years later. He specialised in provision, procurement and depot management, working closely with industry. In 1953 he commanded the Central Ordnance Depot, Didcot, and his last seven years were at the War Office as Deputy Director of Ordnance Services and Director of Ammunition and Stores. He was an ADC to HM the Queen from 1958 to 1961, when he retired from the Army to be Director, UK (later Defence) Codification Authority and UK representative on the NATO panel for Codification of Equipment. Since 1966 he has been a director and consultant with two firms specialising in codification for industry and as a freelance published his book in January 1973.
