H. C. Town, CEng, FIMechE, FlProdE, FRSA, gained his engineering experience with machine tool companies in Yorkshire. He was Head of the Engineering Department and, for some time Acting Principal of Keighley Technical College. An accomplished lecturer, Mr Town has twice been awarded the IMechE's 'Water Arbitration Prize', has received the IProdE's Medal, the Manchester Association of Engineers' Constantine Gold Medal, and three awards in open competition, USA. The author of numerous engineering books, he has specialised in writing about machine tools, hydraulics and production engineering. He is now a consultant.

He was Head of the Engineering Department and, for some time Acting Principal of Keighley Technical College. He has twice been awarded the IMechE's 'Water Arbitration Prize', has received the IProdE's Medal, the Manchester Association of Engineers' Constantine Gold Medal. He specialises in writing about machine tools, hydraulics and production engineering. He is now a consultant, A Baker, BSc, ACGI, Fellow, took his degree in mechanical engineering at the City and Guilds College and later served in the RAFVR as an engineer officer. He has been an engineering writer for many years and was the first editor of Automotive Design Engineering and is a frequent contributor to The Journal of Automotive Engineering. Although primarily a vehicle engineer, he is also involved with fuels, lubricants and materials in general. This article stems from the latter aspect of his work and from his enduring spare-time interest in boats.
