Gutehoffnungshütte, or Gute Hoffnung Hütte, became part of the GHH Group, which was founded in 1758. The Gute Hoffnung ironworks in Oberhausen-Sterkrade went into operation in 1782.

Originally founded as a smelting company, GHH expanded early on into the mining and processing sectors, and transformed in the 20th century into a vast mechanical and plant engineering company, and finally merged into the MAN Group in 1986.
