Grinnell Corporation
1850 The Providence Steam and Gas Pipe Co., founded in Providence, Rhode Island. The company also acted as a plumbing supplier.
Providence Steam and Gas also provided heating service with exhaust steam from Corliss engines, supplied water, and constructed plants for making gas from resin, crude oil, and coal.
The business then became mainly a manufacturer and installer of fire-extinguishing apparatus for factories, especially textile mills.
By 1880 Frederick Grinnell was president of the company.
1880s Grinnell became the largest installer, manufacturer, and supplier of automatic sprinkler and fire protection and detection systems in North America.
1970s Acquired by International Telephone and Telegraph Corporation.
1975 Tyco International acquired the Grinnell subsidiary of ITT.
1986 Tyco purchased Grinnell Flow Control from ITT.
1990 Became the largest fire protection company in the world when it acquired Wormald International Ltd.
By the 1990s, Grinnell was also manufacturing a wide variety of valves, pipes, couplings, fittings, meters, and tubing for flow control. In all, Grinnell offered more than 5,000 fire protection products and devices.
