1905 'ENGINE-HOUSE DAMAGED AT OLDHAM.
A fire broke out at Grange Vale Mill, West End-street, Oldham, on Friday morning. The premises were formerly occupied by Messrs. Samuel Walker and Sons, cotton spinners, and had recently been taken over by the Grange Spinning Co. A new engine Led was being put in, when a workman accidentally upset an oil lamp. The floor of the engine-house being saturated with oil, the flames soon spread to the roof. The firm, who have a direct private wire to the fire station, sent word, and detachments from the Central and Werneth stations were soon on the scene. On their arrival the roof of the engine house was found to be badly damaged. The firemen's efforts to keep the fire from spreading to the main building were successful, the flames being quickly extinguished. The damage was limited to the engine-house, the roof of which was practically destroyed. The directors had taken the precaution to insure the mill against any loss through fire during the alterations required in the rearrangement of the internal working. Any loss sustained is amply covered by insurance, and will cause no delay in getting everything in working order.'
