1878 City of Khios , a screw-steamship of 3220 tons , was launched by Messrs Barclay , Curle & Co ., Glasgow , for Messrs George Smith & Sons' line of Clyde, Mersey , and Calcutta traders. This is the eleventh steamer built for this line during the past ..[3]

1901 the London, Liverpool and Ocean Shipping Co bought 50% of the shares of George Smith’s City Line with the remainder purchased by John Reeves Ellerman who directed the company.
