"GEORGE HAROLD ROME was born in 1878 and was associated with the Permutit Company, Ltd., London, makers of water treatment equipment, from 1904 up to the time of his death, which occurred on 19th September 1950.
He was educated at the Battersea Polytechnic Institute and the Sir John Cass Technical Institute, London. He served his time in the locomotive works of the London and South Western Railway from 1893 to 1900 and after two years' experience with the Sturtevant Engineering Company, Ltd., heating and ventilating engineers, took up an appointment as chief draughtsman to Messrs. Lassen and Hjort (later United Water Softeners, and now the Permutit Company, Ltd.). In 1912 he took charge of commissioning and inspecting installations, and three years later he moved to Nottingham where the rest of his life was spent. His appointment there was that of technical engineer for the Midlands Area and in this capacity he was responsible for the installation of water treatment plant in several of the largest and most important industrial concerns in that area. Mr. Rome retired from active work in 1948 but his services were retained by the firm in a consultative capacity until his decease."
