GEORGE FREDERICK SMITH, M.B.E., had a long experience as a locomotive engineer and was responsible for the construction of engines for various Indian States and South Indian Railways during his twenty-eight years' service with Messrs. Kitson and Company, Ltd. He served his apprenticeship with that firm from 1891 to 1897, and was afterwards made foreman of the pattern shop. Later he became supervisor in the iron foundry.
In July 1914 he was appointed works manager and retained that position until his retirement in 1928. During the war of 1914-18 he was responsible for the erection, for the French Government, of 6 inch howitzer trails and carriages and 8 inch howitzer carriages, and for gun-carrying tanks.
Mr. Smith was elected a Member of the Institution in 1918. His death occurred at Harrogate on 6th February 1941 in his sixty-seventh year.
