George Eric Platford was born in 1883, and obtained his technical education at the Manchester and Salford Technical Schools.
His apprenticeship was served with the General Electric Co at Salford, following which he became personal assistant to Sir Frederick Royce at the commencement of his investigations into motor car problems. In this capacity he was responsible for the testing, preparing, and carrying through of all the early official races and trials of Rolls-Royce cars.
He was appointed Chief Tester and Inspector to the Rolls-Royce Co. in 1907, and retained this position until his death, which took place 20th November, 1938, at the age of 55.
He was elected a Member in 1931, and was prominently associated with the Derby Centre of the Institution.
