George Drysdale Dempsey

George Drysdale Dempsey (1815-1859), architectural engineer of the Great Indian Peninsula Railway and Vice-President of the Bombay Mechanics Institute and author

Known for his guides on the construction of railways, docks, drainage, iron bridges and roofs, including 'Elementary Treatise on the Locomotive Engine in All Its Phases'

1815 Born at London the son of John Dempsey, a Draper, and his wife Sibella Johnson

With his younger brother, William, he was an early member of the Mechanics Institute founded by Dr. Birkbeck.

1849 Bankrupt. 'GEORGE DRYSDALE DEMPSEY, formerly of Carey-street, Chancery-lane, afterwards of Great Russell-street, Bloomsbury, both in Middlesex, during a part of the last residence in Copartnership with William Dempsey, under the style or firm of "Dempsey & Co" "Dempsey & Compy." "G. Drysdale Dempsey & Co,"; then of Esher-street, Lower Kensington-lane, Surrey, during the period of the last mentioned residence having also a temporary residence, first at Maltron, Yorkshire, and then at Union-street, Portsmouth, Hants; and late of Elcom-terrace, New North Road, Islington, Middlesex aforesaid, during the whole of the said residences Civil Engineer, Surveyor, Author, and draughtsman; and also whilst at Carey-street and Great Russell-street aforesaid, Patent Agent and Agent to an Ironfounder; and during a part of the last mentioned residence Manager to an Engineer and Ironfounder.'

1849 Appeal for release from the debtors prison. 'George Drysdale Dempsey, late of Elcom-terrace, New North-road, Islington, Middlesex, Civil Engineer.—In the Debtors' Prison...

1859 November 14th. Died at Bombay. 'On the 14th ult., at Bombay, Mr. G. D. Dempsey, Civil Engineer, late Architectural Engineer of the Great Indian Peninsula Railway, and Vice-President of the Bombay Mechanics' Institution, and author of several works on engineering and other subjects.'
