George Coombes was born in 1875, apprenticed at the Southern Railway Works at Brighton, and obtained general experience in mechanical engineering before joining the Daimler Company in 1905. He spent many years at the Highgate Repair Depot as Works Manager and during the last war was Manager of an Instruction Factory for munition workers.

He returned to the Daimler Company after the war and remained there until his death on 1st October, 1941, at the age of 66.

He was elected an Associate Member in 1911 and transferred to Member in 1921.
