Mr. Thurlow was educated at the Grammar School, Exmouth, and the University of Bristol where he took a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1945. After two years in the Design Office of the Bristol Aeroplane Company (Engine Division), he joined, in 1947, the British Coal Utilisation Research Association, becoming a member of the team studying boiler availability. He was particularly involved in work on air preheaters and in the design of instruments for measuring corrosion and deposit formation in full-scale installations.

Mr. Thurlow has recently been engaged in the formation of a small section to investigate various heat transfer problems associated with the utilisation and combustion of solid fuel. He was awarded the degree of M.Sc. in 1950.
