Mr G. A. Malone, who died on 27th August at the age of 48, received his technical education at the Borough Polytechnic. He was apprenticed to Standard Telephones and Cables Ltd in 1930 and attended the Woolwich Polytechnic during that time. For a year he was a draughtsman on oil refinery plant work with Foster Wheeler Ltd, London.
In 1936 he went to Abadan as a draughtsman with the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, to design refining plant, and the layout and design of gas, water, effluent and steam lines. Later he dealt with estimating, cost, etc., in connection with the construction of oil storage depots.
Mr Malone joined the army at the outbreak of the 1939-45 war, attaining the rank of Captain in a R.E. Field Company. He was taken prisoner in 1941 and was in a P.O.W. camp in Germany until his release in 1945. He returned to the Anglo-Iranian Company in 1946.
Mr Malone became a Graduate of the Institution in 1943 and transferred to Associate Member in the same year. He was the first Chairman of the Aden Joint Group on its formation in 1960 and was an enthusiastic and valuable member of this Institution in its work overseas.
