1936 Obituary [1]
FRANK MUNFORD was educational superintendent to Messrs. John I. Thornycroft, Ltd., of Basingstoke. He was responsible for the technical training of apprentices and pupils serving with the firm, and since 1922 he had taken charge of the arrangements for the holding of the Institution examinations at Basingstoke.
He was born at Plympton St. Mary, Devon, in 1874, and was trained as a teacher at Borough Road College from 1896 to 1898. In 1900 he graduated at the University of London. He then became an assistant master, first in a Sheffield school and later in North London. During 1903-4 he also lectured on English language and literature at Dr. Cusack's Institute, London. This was followed by four years' work at secondary and pupil teachers' schools.
Mr. Munford joined Chester le Street Secondary School, Co. Durham, as senior assistant and science master in 1908, and was appointed head master in 1915; he held this position for five years, and at the same time he organized evening classes in mathematical and technical subjects at the school.
His appointment with Messrs. Thornycroft dated from 1920, when the firm initiated their educational scheme.
In 1925 he was elected a Companion of the Institution. His teaching experience covered an unusually wide range, and he was also a recognized examiner in music in addition to his work in teaching technical subjects.
His death occurred at Basingstoke on 27th April 1936.
