1949 Obituary

"FREDERICK JOHN COOK, whose death occurred on 5th April 1948, was for many years managing director of Messrs. Rudge Littley, iron founders, of West Bromwich. He was also a founder and past-president of the Institute of British Foundrymen, who awarded him the Oliver Stubbs Medal in or about 1922.

During the latter part of his long career as an ironmaster he specialized in foundry mechanization; in connection with which his services as consultant were called upon by numerous engineering firms, including Messrs. Aiton and Company, Ltd., of Derby, and Messrs. R. A. Lister and Company, Ltd., of Dursley. He was educated privately and at the Wolverhampton School of Art and Technical School. After serving his apprenticeship with Messrs. Joseph Evans and Sons, Culwell Foundry, Heath Town, from 1884 to 1891, he was for seven years in the drawing office of Messrs. Belliss and Morcom, Ltd., of Birmingham.

He then began his long association with Messrs. Rudge Littley as manager of the foundry and pattern-shop. In 1917 he joined the board of directors and became responsible for the commercial side of the business. Subsequently he was appointed managing director. This position he relinquished towards the close of his career, though continuing to hold office as chairman. Mr. Cook took an active part in the formation of the British Cast Iron Research Association for whom he acted in an advisory capacity until his retirement in 1946. He was the author of numerous papers on matters connected with the industry and was a member of the Research Committee of the above-named Association. He had been a Member of the Institution since 1923."
