FREDERICK JAMES SCHOFIELD had had many years experience in locomotive running and design in Rhodesia and Mashonaland.
He was born at Huddersfield and from 1891 to 1895 he studied abroad in Germany and France. On his return to England he attended the Technical School, Leeds.
In 1895 he commenced a four years' apprenticeship with Messrs. Kitson and Company and subsequently entered their drawing office, where he remained until 1901.
He was then appointed chief draughtsman in the locomotive department of the Beira and Mashonaland Railway, and in 1905 became manager at the works at Umtali for the Beira and Mashonaland and Rhodesia Railways. Four years later he was appointed district locomotive superintendent at Bulawayo, and was promoted to be assistant locomotive superintendent in 1912.
Some of his more important responsibilities were the organization of the workshop establishment at Bulawayo and the arrangement of water supplies for railway purposes from Bulawayo to the Congo border.
Mr. Schofield had been an Associate Member of the Institution since 1913.
He died in London on 29th August 1933, in his fifty-sixth year.
