1888 Obituary [1]
FREDERIC CARL GUILLIAUME, of Mulheim-on-the-Rhine, was born in 1835, and died at Cologne on the 15th December 1887. He was the sole partner in the well-known firm of Messrs. Felten & Guilliaume, wire-drawers, and manufacturers of telegraph cables, &c.
The German system of underground telegraphy owes much to the late Mr. Guilliaume, who, laying the first line between Berlin and Halle, a distance of 105 miles, in 1876, has since that date provided the greater part of the existing system of 3390 miles. The firm was also largely concerned in the remarkable development of the German wire industry that has occurred within recent years, the annual production of German wire having increased from some 178,000 tons in 1879 to over 400,000 tons in 1887. The works of the firm at Mulheim employed over 2500 hands.
Mr. Guilliaume was elected a member of the Institute in 1880.
