FREDERIC BARRIE JACK was born at Arbroath on 20th October 1873.
He was educated at elementary schools and at the Harris Academy, Dundee, and started his engineering training in the shops of Messrs. Urquhart, Lindsay and Co., of the same city.
After a year he had to give up work in the shops on account of ill-health, and entered a jute broker's office in London.
In 1893 he joined the drawing office staff of the Worthington Pumping Engine Co., and eventually was placed in charge of the Newcastle office.
The firm having been reconstructed, he was recalled to London, and in about 1904 he started the Centrifugal Department of the Firm; in 1909 he was elected a director of the Worthington Pump Co., Ltd., and in 1914 he became resident engineer at the Company's Works at Newark-on-Trent.
At the end of 1917 he became sales manager for Messrs. Ruston, Proctor and Co., Lincoln, and soon started a scheme of re-organization for effecting economies by means of efficient standardization and prevention of overlapping, but owing to ill-health he went at the end of 1918 to Montana-sur-Sierre, Switzerland, where his death took place on 28th February 1919, at the age of forty-five.
He became a Member of this Institution in 1909.
