FRANK WALKER, who died on the 31st October, 1944, was born in 1874 at Hadfield, Glossop, and received his early education at a local elementary school of which his father was the headmaster. He received his practical training as an apprentice with the Edison Swan Electric Co. During his apprenticeship he attended evening classes at the Manchester College of Technology, and on its completion he entered the drawing office, ultimately becoming Chief Draughtsman. He joined the British Westinghouse Co. in 1902, and was continuously in the service of that company and of the Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co. until April, 1939, when he retired owing to ill-health. During his long service with Metropolitan-Vickers he was employed in many departments—the Mechanical, Switchgear, Plant and General Engineering, Sales and Works Management Departments, and finally the Publicity Department, where his full knowledge of the organization and its various products was of great value. While in the Switchgear Engineering Department, one of his early duties was the design and installation of the switchgear for Greenwich Power Station. His many friends at Metropolitan-Vickers sincerely regret the passing of such an old colleague.
He joined The Institution as an Associate Member in 1903 and was elected a Member in 1931. In 1907 he read a paper before The Institution on "Remote Control of High-Tension Switchgear."
