"FRANK ROBERTS, whose untimely death occurred on 1st January 1950, at the early age of thirty-seven, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1947. His apprenticeship (which extended to twelve years, from 1928 to 1940) was served with the National Gas and Oil Engine Company, Ltd., Ashton under Lyne, during which period he gained experience as a draughtsman and also studied at the Manchester Municipal College of Technology, where he obtained an Associateship.
Following a short engagement as jig and tool designer to Messrs. J. Fowler and Company, Ltd., Leeds, he was employed in a similar capacity by the S.U. Carburetter Company, Ltd., Addingham. After occupying in succession the positions of planner, checker, and finally chief jig and tool draughtsman, he transferred, in 1945, to Messrs. Douglas (Kingswood), Ltd., Bristol, for whom he was engaged as a planning engineer. In this capacity he had a varied responsibility under the chief planning engineer, including detail process and assembly planning for mass production of petrol engines and motor cycles, in addition to supervising tool requisitioning and investigating manufacturing difficulties. Mr. Roberts continued in this work until the close of his brief and promising career."
