"FRANK PLATTS, who was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1920, retained a close connection with Sheffield throughout his professional career. He was educated at the Sheffield Technical School, and after serving an apprenticeship with Messrs. G. and J. Halls, Ltd., engineers and toolmakers, from 1904 to 1911, was placed in charge of the maintenance department of Messrs. Charles Neil and Company, Ltd., toolmakers. After two years' experience with that firm he occupied various positions with firms in Sheffield including those of assistant engineer in the steelworks of Messrs. Kayser, Ellison and Company, Ltd., and maintenance engineer to Messrs. Thomas Firth and Son, Ltd., steel manufacturers, and for a period was managing partner in his own engineering business. In 1925 he took up his final appointment on again becoming associated with Messrs. Thomas Firth and Son (now the Firth Vickers Stainless Steel Company, Ltd.) and held the post of machine shop foreman; his duties in this respect being especially concerned with the carrying out of tests on machinery by means of heat treatment. Mr. Platts's death occurred on 17th December 1949, at the age of fifty-nine."
