FRANK HORACE LUMISDEN STRANGE spent practically the whole of his professional career in India. He received his general education at Trent College and his technical instruction at the City and Guilds Central College. On the termination of a five years' apprenticeship at the Horwich works of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway in 1910, he proceeded to India where his first appointment was that of assistant locomotive superintendent, Indian State Railways, subsequently becoming district locomotive superintendent.
From 1916 to 1918 he was attached to the Royal Engineers, and served in East Africa with the temporary rank of captain, where he was in charge of the locomotive department of the military railways. He then returned to the service of the Indian State Railways and was employed as district locomotive superintendent; later he became divisional mechanical engineer. In 1931 he was appointed deputy chief mechanical engineer of the North Western Railway of India, a position he retained for five years. His final appointment was that of locomotive, carriage, and wagon superintendent of the Jodhpur Railway.
During the war of 1939-45 he was attached to the inspectorate of the Ministry of Supply. Mr. Strange, whose death in his sixty-second year occurred at Worthing on 15th April 1946, was elected a Member of the Institution in 1922.
