FRANCIS W. GILBERTSON, B.A., of Pontardawe, died suddenly on October 8, 1929, at the age of fifty-six.
He was well known in the Welsh steel and tinplate industry. He was chairman and managing director of Messrs. W. Gilbertson & Co., Ltd., a director of the Great Western Railway Company, and vice-chairman of the Federation of British Industries.
He played a large part in the foundation of University College, Swansea, and was its first president. During the war he rendered valuable service to the Ministry of Munitions.
Mr. Gilbertson was a Life Member of the Iron and Steel Institute, having been elected in 1896. In 1920 he was elected a Member of Council, and his hospitable reception and entertainment of the members on the occasion of their visit to Swansea during the South Wales Meeting in 1920 will be remembered by many. For reasons of health he withdrew from the Council in 1924.
