Francis C. E. Burnett (1878-1943)

1943 Obituary [1]

FRANCIS C. E. BURNETT was born in 1878 at Galashiels, Scotland, and was educated at Galashiels Academy and the Heriot-Watt College, Edinburgh. After serving with Siemens Brothers he joined the staff of Witting, Eborall and Co. and acted as their resident engineer on a number of power and tramway schemes. Later he joined Kincaid, Watson, Manville and Dawson, consulting engineers.

In 1907 he emigrated to Canada and acted successively as assistant to Mr. J. Kynoch, Chief Engineer of the Canadian General Electric Co., and as Power Engineer for the Canada Cement Co., a position which he held for a number of years during which he was responsible for a large amount of development work. Later he built up an agency business in Canada and represented several British firms. He continued to do so until the time of his death, but when the war placed many restrictions and difficulties in the way of importing British goods into Canada, he also joined the Canada Car and Foundry Co., of Montreal. He died on the 20th January, 1943.

Although for a number of years he had not enjoyed the best of health, his cheery disposition enabled him to make light of this disadvantage and he was never happier than when he found himself able to assist a fellow engineer. He joined The Institution in 1902 as an Associate and was elected a Member in 1913.
