1957 Obituary [1]

We record with regret the death of Mr. Ewen H. Smith, the chairman and managing director of David Rowan and Co., Ltd., which occurred last week at his home in Bearsden, Glasgow. Mr. Smith, a past chairman of the National Association of Marine Engine Builders, was a vice-president of Scottish Engineering Employers' Association, and of the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Scotland, and a member of the Clyde Navigation Trust.

He served his apprenticeship with Earles Shipbuilding and Engineering Company, Ltd., and after serving in the first world war joined Workman, Clark and Co., Ltd., becoming a director in 1932.

For a number of years Mr. Smith was associated with the Central Marine Engine Works of William Gray and Co., Ltd., which he left on his appointment as deputy managing director of David Rowan and Co., Ltd., in 1945.

In 1948, he became managing director and four years later he was appointed chairman.
