ERNEST RYLES was born in 1886 and received his technical education at Rutherford College, Newcastle upon Tyne. After serving his apprenticeship from 1902 to 1907 with Messrs. Clarke, Chapman and Company, Ltd., of Gateshead, he was appointed engineer and designer to the Sunderland Forge and Engineering Company, but a year later returned to the former Company in the capacity of assistant chief draughtsman, a position which he held for three years.
He joined Sir W. G. Armstrong, Whitworth and Company, Ltd., in 1911, and at first was engaged on the design of gun mountings and field, carriages. Later he was transferred to the design of ships' propelling machinery, and was promoted to be chief draughtsman. From 1923 he was attached to the London office, where he was employed as mechanical engineer and sales manager. His final position, which he occupied from 1929, was that of district sales manager for London and the Home Counties on behalf of the Atlas Diesel Company, of Wembley, Middlesex, for whom he also acted as technical adviser.
Mr. Ryles, whose death occurred on 6th December 1942, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1927.
