Mr Ernest Norton, C.B.E., B.E.M. (Member), is the Deputy Managing Director of Yarrow and Co. Ltd.
He was educated at Portsmouth Technical College and the Royal Dockyard School. In 1933 he joined the staff of the Engineer-in-Chief of the Fleet at the Admiralty and worked on the design of propulsion machinery for cruisers. His wartime work was concerned with turbine and gearing problems.
In 1946 he was awarded the B.E.M. and four years later he moved to Yarrow and Co. as Chief Design Engineer in the Yarrow Admiralty Research Department, later becoming a Director of the Company and Head of the Research Department. He was appointed to his present position in 1962.
His recent work has been concerned with the use of gas turbines in combination with geared steam turbines for ship propulsion, and he is now actively concerned with the use of nuclear power for ships. Mr Norton acted as technical adviser to the Chandos Committee which considered a replacement for the Queen Mary. He received a C.B.E. in 1961.
In 1950 Mr Norton became an Associate Member of the Institution and he transferred to Member in 1958.
