ERNEST LEWIS had an unusually varied engineering career. On leaving St. Andrew's Higher Grade School in Birkenhead in 1895, he commenced his apprenticeship with Messrs. John Jones and Son in their shipbuilding and engineering works at Liverpool, which ended in 1901. Subsequently he then served, until 1909, as fourth, third, second, and chief engineer on steamships of the Houston Line and other companies; he obtained a first-class Board of Trade Competency Certificate in 1905.
In 1910 he became engineer-in-chief to the Waldorf Hotel Company, Aldwych, London, and held that position until he was appointed engineer surveyor to the Gresham Insurance Society in 1913. During the war of 1914-18 he served as a first-class chief engine room artificer in the Royal Navy. In 1919 he joined the Scottish Boiler and General Insurance Company and held the position of engineer surveyor to that firm for the Stoke-on-Trent district at the time of his death, which occurred on 10th March 1941, at the age of 61 years.
Mr. Lewis was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1919.
