"ERNEST HEMUS, whose death occurred on 10th May 1951 at the age of sixty, was elected a Member of the Institution of Automobile Engineers in 1943. He began his professional career in 1904 as an improver to Guest, Keen, and Nettlefold, Ltd., and after four years' experience was successively employed as machine operator for the Austin Motor Company, Ltd., Birmingham, and marker out for the Daimler Motor Company, Ltd., Coventry, and the Baguley Motor Company, Ltd., Burton-on-Trent. He returned to the Austin Motor Company in 1912 and remained there until the end of his career. His first position was that of inspector, in which capacity he twice visited the United States on behalf of the firm to inspect and supervise shipment of parts of war vehicles. After acting for thirteen years as assistant to the chief inspector he was promoted in 1931 to that post with control of 1,000 assistants."
