ERNEST BACON was educated at Bury Grammar School and at the King's School, Worcester, and served his apprenticeship in the works of the London and North Western Railway at Crewe, from 1900 to 1903, during which period he took a year's course in engineering at Liverpool University. He then began a connection with the motor industry which lasted to the end of his professional career, his first employment being that of first assistant to the fitting superintendent of the Wolseley Motor Works at Birmingham.
Subsequently he was made superintendent of the chassis erecting shops. After holding the position of general manager of Mr. H. F. S. Morgan's garage at Malvern, from 1906 to 1909, he was engaged in a similar capacity for five years with the Cleveland Car Company, Ltd., of Darlington. Shortly after his appointment as branch general manager to Messrs. Mann, Egerton and Company, Ltd., of Bury St. Edmunds, he was commissioned in the R.A.S.C., and served in France as corps workshops officer until his demobilization in 1919 with the rank .of captain, when he returned to Messrs. Mann Egerton.
Some five years later he was appointed wholesale representative for the Rover Company, Ltd., Coventry, with whom he remained for a similar period; and finally, after holding the position of sales manager to the Cheam Motor Company, Ltd., for a brief period, he went into retirement. Mr. Bacon, whose death occurred at Budleigh Salterton, Devonshire, on 4th December 1943, in his sixty-third year, was elected a Graduate of the Institution in 1902, and was transferred to Associate Membership in 1908.
