ERIC WANKLYN MACLEAN was associated with Messrs. J. J. Niven and Company, Ltd., engineers and export merchants, of Wellington, New Zealand, for the whole of his professional career. Mr. Maclean was well known to a large number of engineers in New Zealand in his capacity as managing director of Messrs. Niven, a position to which he was appointed in 1937.
He was born in 1886 and educated at the Collegiate School, Wanganui. He then came to England and entered Cambridge University where he graduated B.A. in the Mechanical Sciences Tripos. He served his apprenticeship from 1907 to 1910 with Messrs. Davey, Paxman and Company, Ltd., Colchester, and with the Linde British Refrigerating Company, and Messrs. Electromotors, Ltd. He began his association with Messrs. Niven in 1910 when he joined the firm's London office, and in the same year he was transferred to the Napier Branch in New Zealand.
In 1911 he received a further transfer, this time to the Auckland office. Mr. Maclean joined the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in 1914 and was a member of the Auckland Infantry Battalion. While he was in Gallipoli he received a commission, and he subsequently served in France with the Machine Gun Corps, and was later appointed instructor at Grantham Machine Gun School. He returned to Messrs. Niven in New Zealand in 1918, and received rapid promotion in the firm, eventually succeeding Mr. Lionel Nelson as managing director.
His death occurred at Wellington on 11th December 1940. He was elected a Graduate of the Institution in 1907 and was transferred to Associate Membership in 1914.
