ENOCH HIND was born at Nottingham on 9th August 1846, being the son of the late Mr. William Hind, builder and contractor, of that city.
On leaving school he entered his father's business, and eventually took over the management and entered into contracts of considerable magnitude. He was a shrewd man of business, quickly taking in the requirements of big undertakings, and much of his success was due to his practical knowledge. Although his business operations were not confined to Nottingham, yet within the city he carried out many extensive works, some of these being connected with restorations after fires.
He carried out much important railway work. Many years ago he built all the stations on the Nottingham and suburban line, and, when the Great Central Railway extension to London was undertaken, he carried out, in conjunction with the contractors for this section, a large part of the station work.
In addition, he was responsible for station buildings in the district of Chesterfield and Sheffield. Among other special contracts he carried out were the erection of ironworks at Middlesbrough, enlargement of works at Sheffield for the Toledo Steel Co., etc.
He had been in indifferent health for about a year, when his death took place from heart failure on 29th July 1910, in his sixty-fourth year.
He became an Associate of this Institution in 1887.
