1941 Obituary [1]

EDWARD MIDGLEY, M.Sc., was educated at Leeds University where he graduated B.Sc. with first-class honours in electrical engineering in 1921. He obtained his degree in 1939. After serving his apprenticeship, from 1913 to 1917, with Messrs. James N. Durie, screwing machine makers, and with Messrs. Concord and Company, he became a fitter, first in Portsmouth Dockyard and later, during 1919-20, with Messrs. Brunner Mond, Ltd.

He entered the service of the British Cotton Industry Research Association at the Shirley Institute, Didsbury, in 1922, where he remained as research assistant until 1927. He was then promoted to be senior assistant in the testing department, and took charge of the drawing office and workshop for the production of full-scale textile machinery. He was also the author of Shirley Institute memoranda on the subjects of the mechanical testing of cotton materials and tensile tests for cotton yarns.

Mr. Midgley was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1940, a few months before his death. He was killed in an air raid on 13th September 1940, in his forty-sixth year.
