M. Sauvage, Engineer-in-chief of Mines, Director of the Eastern Railway Company of France, and Deputy of the National Assembly, died at Paris on the 11th of November.
M. Sauvage was born at Sedan in 1814. At seventeen years of age he entered the Polytechnic School, and on leaving it selected the branch of mining engineering or his career. After having filled various appointments in Spain and Greece, he entered the service of the Strasbourg Railway Company.
The following year he became engineer-in-chief of the line from Paris to Lyons, and was appointed in 1848 as commissioner extraordinary to repress a strike which had taken place at Creusot. Afterwards the Government confided to him the administration of the Orleans line. The same year he entered the service of the Lyons Railway Company, in the capacity of engineer-in-chief of material, and passed, in 1852, to a similar appointment upon the Eastern Railway, of which he became director in 1862.
