1963 Died. 'The death has taken place in the Windsor Hospital, Berkshire, of Professor Edmund Giffen, of Queen's University, Belfast, graduate who held the Chair of Civil and Mechanical Engineering at Queen Mary College, University of London. Professor Giffen was born in Gilford, County Down, and educated at the Masonic Boys' School, Dublin, before becoming an apprentice in the Harland and Wolff engine shop, After studying applied science at Belfast College of Technology, he took his BSc degree at Queen’s in 1928. He later took his PhD in London and became Professor of Engineering at King's College before being appointed in 1940 as Director of Research at the Automobile Engineering Laboratories. He then went to London University as a lecturer being appointed to the Chair of Civil and Mechanical Engineering. In 1956, Professor Giffen led a team of professional engineers on a tour of Russia and later was awarded the Institute of Mechanical Engineers James Clayton Prize for his contribution to engineering education.'[2]
