1937 Dorman and Smith (1937) Ltd was renamed Dorman and Smith Ltd

1945 Patent with Thomas Atherton on "Improvements in and relating to electric plug and socket connections" (one of many patents)

1958 Dorman and Smith transferred its works from Salford to Preston

Presumably became part of Dorman Smith Holdings

1969 The name of Dorman and Smith Ltd was changed to Dorman Smith Switchgear Ltd

1977 Acquired by BICC.[1]

1988 the company was re-organised into 2 divisions:[2]

  • Dorman Smith Engineered Systems
  • Dorman Smith Switchgear Division

2001 The trade and assets were acquired by Tyco Electronics UK Ltd, a subsidiary of Raychem Ltd.

2025 The company is based in Braintree but still has an office in Preston[3]
