A Mr Kingsford, of Brighton, devised and patent a process that could make coke whilst steam was being made. Mr Kingsford owned a chemical works at Hackney Wick.[1]

1887 The process was put to use in 2 furnaces at the cement works of Lee, Sons and Co (of Snodland).
