Cuthbert Edward Venables (1863-1942) of Roots and Venables

1863 July 24th. Born at Chester the son of Revd. Henry Venables (1824- ) and his wife Jessy Maria Jeddere Fisher (1823-1901)

1882 Cambridge University. 'Adm. pens. (age 20) at PEMBROKE, Oct. 2, 1882. Only s. of the Rev. Henry (1842), of Reading. B. [July 24, 1863], at Chester. [School, Charterhouse.] Matric. Michs. 1882; B.A. 1885. A mechanical engineer. Died Sept. 7, 1942, aged 79, at Cumnor Hill, Oxford. (Crockford; The Times, Sept. 9, 1942.)'[1]

1891 A Lodger at 10 Storey Square, Barrow-in-Furness: Cuthbert E. Venables (age 27 born Chester), a Marine Engineer Draughtsman.[2]

1901 A lodger at 89 Lambeth P. Road, London: C. E. Venables (age 37 born Chester), a Mechanical Engineer - Motor Vehicles, and Employer.[3]

1909 Creditor of the English and Foreign Syndicate when it is listed for winding up.[4]

1911 A Lodger at 71 Palace Rd, Lambeth, London SE: Cuthbert Edward Venables (age 47 born Chester), a Consulting Engineer (Mechanical) at Brickworks, and Employer.[5]

1911 June. Bankrupt. 'To-day, at Bankruptcy-buildings, W.C., the creditors met under the failure of Cuthbert Edward Venables, described as of 54, New Broad-street, City. The debtor was commission agent dealing in oil, rubber, and house properties. 1893 he inherited £20,000, and afterwards lost, half of the money in a motor car company. He attributed his failure depredation in the value of cottage property in which had been largely interested, to his having borrowed money at excessive rates of interest, and to the failure companies in which held shares. The debtor returned his liabilities at £14,094, and valued his assets at £2,737. A trustee was appointed.'[6]
