1869 Thomas Tomlinson Cussons opened a chemist shop in Swinton.

1909 Thomas's son Alexander Tom Cussons founded the business in a room above his father's chemist shop. He then bought a bleach mill at Kersal Vale, Salford.

1920 Cussons commenced soap manufacture in England.

1922 British Industries Fair Advert as Manufacturing Chemists, Perfumers, Packers, and Soap makers. Specialities: "Maydew" Toilet preparations for Hair, Skin, and all Toilet occasions; "Maydew" Shaving Stick; "Kervalli" Perfumes. Experts in Toilet Goods for any occasion; Packers of Chemists' and Grocers' Sundries; Makers of Fine Toilet Soaps in any Shape, Style or Perfume. Specialists in Tinned Ointments, etc. [1]

1955 Acquired Gerard Brothers of Nottingham .

1970 Employs 700 at Kersal Vale and a total of 1,800 in the group.[4]
