Criggion Radio Station

From Graces Guide

of Criggion, Montgomeryshire.

1940 Plans were made to construct two HF (High frequency or short-wave) radio stations, an LF (low frequency) station and a VLF (very low frequency) station, as a reserve for the VLF transmitter at Rugby should it succumb to enemy action.

1942 Two HF transmitters were commissioned - one was a Standard Telephones and Cables type CS3B, and the other was a Marconi type SWB8.

1943 The VLF transmitter was brought into service early to take over the VLF duty of the Rugby Radio Station on a frequency of 16 kHz when that station was destroyed by a fire. After Rugby's restoration, Criggion transmitted at frequencies of 15.2kHz / 15.4kHz.

1967/68 A larger VLF aerial system was installed.

c1971/2 the HF services were discontinued.

2003 The VLF and LF services were discontinued.
