1858 'Fire. - On Wednesday morning last, about half-past ten, a fire broke out in the workshops belonging Messrs. Coombs, millwrights, &c., situate in North-street. Fortunately it was confined to only a portion of the premises, all communication having been cut off ; but we hear that a quantity of plank timber was burnt, besides two turning-lathes being much damaged. We are glad to find that Messrs. Coombs' loss (about £200) is covered by insurance in the Wilts, Susses, and Dorset Office. The cause of the fire is supposed to have been sparks from the forge chimney falling in a sawpit adjoining the premises.'[1]

'BEAMINSTER, June 10th. 1885. Sir,—I have this day DISPOSED of my MILLWRIGHT and ENGINEERING BUSINESS, which has been conducted by me and my two predecessors for fully a century past, to Messrs. G. SAMSON & SON, of the Grove Iron Works, Bridport.

Sir, - Having SUCCEEDED to the old-established MILLWRIGHT and ENGINEERING BUSINESS of MR. E. COOMBS, of Beaminster, it is our intention to carry on this Branch, in conjunction with our other Business, at the above Works.
We trust to receive a continuance of your favours. We have purchased Mr. Coombs' Models and Machine Tools, which will, we believe, enable us to execute satisfactorily any work which may be entrusted to us.—Yours truly,
