Consolidated Gold Fields plc

1887 Company founded; incorporated in London to fund the newly-discovered gold reefs in the Transvaal.

By 1900 the company had started to diversify outside South Africa, and to become a relatively widespread natural resource group.

1930s its major mineral discoveries in South Africa led to this being the main area of investment.

Post WWII Reduced dependence upon South Africa, leading to the development or acquisition of mines in the United States and Australia.

1968 Acquired Amalgamated Roadstone

1972 Acquired Amey

1970s-80s Development of a crushed stone business in the United Kingdom and the United States. Three major wholly-owned subsidiaries:

  • ARC Ltd in the United Kingdom from acquisition of Amalgamated Roadstone (1968) and Amey[1]
  • Gold Fields Corporation in USA
  • ARC America in USA.

1985 Acquired Bath and Portland Group and sold parts of 2 of its divisions soon afterwards

1989 Take-over proposed by Minorco but rejected by the Competition Commission; shortly afterwards, taken over by Hanson
